2011 is here !! Happy New Year!

My goodness!! It has been almost a year since I posted on my blog. So unacceptable hahahaha..I had a busy 2010. I did some traveling, my baby graduated from college (YAY!!), started a couple business ventures, etc. The business ventures are probably the main reason I haven't updated my blog. I think I sewed maybe 3 or 4 times in 2010. I just did not have the time. I put all my energy into by business. Which is what you may be asking LOL! I started my own handcrafted bath and body product website. It's going good. I am still trying to get my name out there but it's coming along to be so new. My site is www.scentofaqueen.com. I did manage to whip me up a little something to wear out for New Years Eve. My husband and I decided at the LAST minute to get a room at the Grand Hyatt for the evening just to get out of the house. There were several parties going on there and I just wanted something cute but not too dressy to wear.

MCCALL 6240

Fabric used: Stretchy sequin-I think it's called Confetti knit or something like that..

Complexity of pattern: Zip, Zero, Zilch-this had to be the easiest pattern I have ever sewn. There are only 3 pieces to this garment.

How long did it take to complete: It took me about an hour and half only because the fabric is a nightmare to work with.

Overall Review: I love the look and fit of the dress and I wore leggings because it is too cold to be having your legs all out. The fabric gums up on the needle and makes the bobbin skip around something awful. I had to sew REALLY slow to try and stop all the skipping. I didn't try using a different needle because I was too lazy to look for any in my stash so I had to suffer through it. I doubt if that would of mattered anyway but who knows.

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY TO ME!!

Yes, this ol bird is 40 now LOL! I don't feel any different. I am the skinniest I have been in a few years and my skin is clearer and smooth too. Is my body confused on what it is suppose to be doing?? hahahahahahaha...I had a wonderful birthday. My mother, daughter and some other friends traveled to celebrate with me. I had a 3 day celebration so needless to say, I was exhausted but it was worth it. I did manage to sew me up a couple items to wear. Friday night was ladies night out so I made this cute Zebra jacket(Butterick 5142)with a fur collar and sleeves. I wasn't sure if it was going to work out well with the fur but it did. Saturday night I wanted all the ladies to wear red and I wanted to wear something elegant(Vogue 2879) and I found the perfect pattern for it.

I found THE perfect shoes!! The fabric on them was pretty much the same fabric I used for jacket.

Fabric used: Zebra printed rayon/poly and faux fur for collar and sleeve flounces.

Complexity of pattern: The pattern was simple. It called for lining the jacket and sleeves only and not the peplum but I lined everything. The fur collar didn't give me a problem but the sleeve flounces took some extra time. I also lined the back of each fur piece. It called for a frog clasp which I have never used before but it was a piece of cake.

How long did it take to complete: About 5 hours

Overall Review: The jacket is really nice. I was so tickled to find the shoes to match it:-) I like the peplum on it and how the sleeve flounces look.

Fabric used: Red knit. I ordered it from Fabric Mart and was very pleased. I very rarely order fabric off the internet but this fabric was perfect.

Complexity of pattern: Ok I must say that I did alot of talking to myself while I was sewing this hahahaha...I had to verbally speak some of the directions to help me figure out what to do. The bottom party of the dress was a bit of a doosie but I worked it out.

How long did it take to complete: Surprisingly it didn't take as long as I thought it would. There really aren't that many steps to the pattern and I think it took around 5 hours to complete. Cutting it out took extra long.

Overall Review: I absolutely love this dress. Everybody was in awe at the fact that I made it. I got a couple requests from friends to make them one hahaha..I don't think I want to rehash all of that though. A shorter version might be cute.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope everyone had a great holiday and fabulous New Year. Mine was wonderful wonderful wonderful!! I managed to get some sewing done. A few hoodies for the kids and a couple things for myself. My latest project had me almost telling my husband to go buy me a pack of Newport cigarettes to calm my nerves!! hahaha..it dealt me a fit. And it wasn't the pattern, it was the fabric I was using but it paid off. I am IN LOVE with my new coat. I have been wearing everyday this week. Time for a break from it. I don't have any pictures with me actually wearing it though. My son is the fill in photographer and he is way shorter than me so the pics didn't come out to my liking.

Fabric used: Hounds tooth print that I think is some type of rayon blend but I am not sure. It unravels like crazy. It is almost like a yarn. It is really thick too. I had major issues sewing the buttonholes and some of the other areas because it is thick and in conjunction with having interfacing and lining, it was rough but I managed to work with it. I did not have enough of the fabric to use as facings so I used some black rayon fabric I had and it was a blessing in disguise because using the same material for the facing would of made this impossible to sew. I used purple flannel back satin for the lining and I am telling you this coat is so warm. We have had 20 degree temps here and it is barely bothering me at all.

Complexity of pattern: This is probably advanced beginner or intermediate. I had no issues what so ever it was mainly the fabric. I made the view that is shown in white on the envelope.

How long did it take to complete: TOO LONG!!! I can't really access this pattern because of all the issue I had with the fabric but I worked on it for 2 days pretty much all day and into the evening.

Overall Review: I love it!! The button detail and collar are my favorite. This has to be one of my favorite pieces that I have made if not the favorite.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!! I hope Santa was good to yall!!

I am trying to get my sewing groove back so I have been working on a few things. I decided since I liked two of these jackets from this pattern that I would just sew them back to back to get it over with. I made Views A and B.

Fabric used: White fleece

Complexity of pattern: I think this is an advanced beginner. Putting in separating zippers are easier than regular ones IMO. Nothing about the pattern was really difficult.

How long did it take to complete: About 7 hours

Overall Review: I like how this jacket turned out. The sleeves and collar are what I like most. The slanting zipper is a great touch as well. I don't think the pockets are deep enough though. Other than that, it's a cute little jacket. I might make this version again. I have some corduroy I have been having for awhile that I have been trying use up forever.

Fabric used: Quilted plaid outerwear-now I must say I don't know why I like to torture myself with sewing plaid. Somewhere and somehow the lines are not going to match up hahahaha!! At least for me..maybe I need to study up on working with plaids. The fabric has that filling or batting material or whatever you call it so the jacket is kind of warm.

Complexity of pattern: Advanced beginner..the zippers on the sleeves are a little tricky.

How long did it take to complete: About 9 hours..maybe more..the matching the plaid gave me a few issues.

Overall Review: I do like this pattern. I love the zipper detail on this view. Again the pockets could be a little deeper. I forgot to put the snap in both the jackets up by the collar. I don't think the white one needs it but the plaid one does so I will go back an put it in.

I whipped these two pieces up awhile ago.

Fabric used: Grey knit-I have had this fabric in my stash for awhile and it was perfect for this.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner..very easy. I made View C

How long did it take to complete: About 2 hours

Overall Review: This is the second time I have used this pattern. I made View B with orange fleece. The review is in a previous post. It is a really easy pattern to work with and has several options. I love the fringe look. I can see doing one in a red or even a purple.

Fabric used: Burgundy matte jersey-I have had this fabric in my stash for awhile too

Complexity of pattern: I would say advanced beginner but I didn't follow the directions and did my own thing with the dress that was easier. I did not put in a zipper and I made view B with long sleeves.

How long did it take to complete: About 3 hours

Overall Review: This is a very cute pattern. I did find it odd that it called for a zipper being that you are to use some type of knit but I guess depending on the knit, you might need a zipper. I don't think matte jersey has that much stretch and I got the dress on with no problems.

McCall 5859/Vogue 8601 and 8603

I guess I have fallen in the "once a month" updating mode LOL! I am going to try and do better but I am thinking about letting my son play basketball when football season is over so I may be stuck in this mode for awhile. At least I haven't put my sewing totally in the back burner :-) We had a surprise birthday party for my mom and it was a major hit! She was so shocked and happy she cried for 3 or 4 minutes. I was trying to upload the video to here but it wouldn't work but it is priceless!!

Fabric used: Animal printed cotton. It's thicker almost like a decorator fabric.

Complexity of pattern: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate. Nothing to difficult. It is lined so it took extra time. It seemed to have a lot of pieces to the pattern for such a small jacket but that is normal I guess for ones with princess seams. I made View B in size 14.

How long did it take to complete: About 7 hours

Overall Review: I like this pattern. Very nice. The pockets and the way the sleeves are made is really cute. I like the collar as well. I had planned on making the short sleeve version this summer but never got around to it so I decided to make the long sleeve version and use some the rest of that animal print fabric I have had forever. I wish I had of took up close pics of the buttons and sleeves.

Sorry for the glare but I wanted you to see the jacket has black in it because the other pictures look goldish in color.

Fabric used: Paisley printed Brocade. It is mainly black and has gold and like a mauvish color. I made View C in size 12.

Complexity of pattern: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate. This one wasn't hard either and it is lined as well. The bottom button is set inside the seam which I like. Saves time from doing button holes. I normally don't buy Vogue patterns but I found a few I liked when they had the online pattern sale about 3 weeks to a month ago.

How long did it take to complete: About 9 hours

Overall Review: I love this pattern. Everything went together well. I don't know why I expected the tail portion to be difficult. The darts in the elbow area are a different little touch. I had more issues with the collar but that was my fault. The tails don't seem to hang down as far on me as it shows on the envelope though. I think my butt is just huge and it's hiking them up some hahaha...I wore it to my mother's party. I got loads of compliments and my little sister wants me to make her one in emerald green one lol! I might make this again somewhere down the road. I have a couple of similar patterns that I want to try out first.

I don't know why I am sticking my butt out like that and the skirt is a little crooked hahahaha

Fabric used: Grey polyester blend..I bought about 4 yards of this awhile ago and I am slowly using it up. I made View A in size 12 or 14 I can't remember.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner..this was an easy one.

How long did it take to complete: About 4 hours

Overall Review: I LOVE pattern!! I did have some reservations that the gathering on the sides was going to make me look extra wide but they don't hahaha..Love the gathering in the back as well. I want to make this again and I already bought some plaid fabric for it but something is telling me that the way the gathers are, it might be best to use solid colored fabric so you can see them better but maybe not. I still might do it.

Long time no blog hahaha. A few things have been going on the last month that have kept me from blogging and sewing that much. My machine was in the shop for a week, I was working on an embroidery project for the ladies in my church group, football season is here which takes up alot of my time and just pure laziness of course. I managed to sew up a few easy projects this month though. This may or may not be the last time you see any orange items which is the color of my son's football team. He may quit the team. Long story but the decision isn't final yet but if he doesn't, I will be making a few more orange items and possibly some burgundy ones which is the color of my other son's team. I bought this orange furry fabric and this orange velveteen that has me thinking wth was I thinking hahahahahahhaa...but knowing me, I will make something with it and wear it like I am the bomb!

hahaha..ol school rabbit ears..my daughter is so in to Michael Jackson that she listens to it everywhere we go.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner. This pattern is similar to M5241

How long did it take to complete: About 2 hours

Overall Review: I like this pattern. It was really simple and just warm enough for a breezy day. The hem is time consuming because of the way it's made. I like the way it ties in the back. I made the McCall version of this some time ago in black and have misplaced it or lost it. I might have left it on the train so I will probably use this pattern to make another one in black.

Fabric used: Orange fleece

Complexity of pattern: Beginner. Nothing difficult about this pattern at all. I made View B in size M.

How long did it take to complete: About 3 hours

Overall Review: I like this pattern too. Very cute. Some of the other football Moms were asking where I bought it from hahaha..the pockets seemed a bit small to me. They could of been a smidge bigger IMO..also I think interfacing the collar with a light weight interfacing would make it stand up a little more. I should of listened to my first mind and did it but decided not to but it turned out alright. I have some burgundy fleece in my stash so I may make it again when I go to one of my other son's games.

Fabric used: Multi colored rayon..I had to have this fabric when I saw it but it was only 1 1/4 yards left on the bolt. I was going to make a skirt but I am on a mission to use old patterns and stash fabric so I decided on this shrug pattern I have been having over a year or so.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner. Pretty easy to make. I made View C in a size 12.

How long did it take to complete: About 3 hours

Overall Review: This pattern was nice. I like the way the collar part and the flared out sleeves are made.

I had tea again at The Mandarin Oriental with the ladies church group that I am in. There are about 12 of us but only a few could make the tea. They are a great group of women. Very positive.

Fabric used: Black, yellow and white printed cotton from Joanns. I think it was from their Cosmopolitan line. It was a good weight, easy to work with and I probably could of gotten away without lining it if I wanted to.

Complexity of pattern: Advanced Beginner probably..it wasn't difficult. I did the hem and slit in in the back a little different and easier than the directions.

How long did it take to complete: About 7 hours

Overall Review: I absolutely LOVE how this dress turned out. It fits really well. I really like the back of the dress and the bow tie belt. I am giving it a 8 out of 10.

I sewed up a few things for my recent trip back to Nebraska. As usual, I waited until the last minute and got everything done in about 2 days hahaha..for the most part everything was easy to throw together. I think I am officially done sewing maxi dresses for the year. I think I might try and start my fall wardrobe a bit early this year. I made the black and pink dress Saturday night for something cute to wear for my date with my husband on Sunday. He was returning from a trip to Georgia.

McCall 5889

Fabric used: White Linen-I made a jumpsuit using this pattern for the pants and a simple self drafted pattern for the top portion.

How long did it take to complete: I put this together in about an hour and half.

Overall Review: The pants pattern is super easy and has a relaxed fit. Just the look I was going for. Instead of using elastic at the bottom, I made ties. I might use this pattern again to have some quick, comfortable pants to wear.

SIMPLICITY 2590

Fabric used: Jungle printed rayon

Complexity of pattern: Not hard at all..I made the halter version in size 12.

How long did it take to complete: About an hour and half

Overall Review: This pattern was great. The sizing said the finished bust would be 39and 1/2 which I was scared is was going to be too big and gappy looking on me but it fit perfect.

SIMPLICITY 2647

Fabric used: Purple knit-the picture doesn't show the color too well or do the dress justice cause my husband was sitting down when he took the pic LOL! and I forgot to take a pic of it the night I actually wore the dress. I had on this real pretty purple necklace and earrings.

Complexity of pattern: This pattern was easier than I expected. I thought the ruffle looking thing in the front was going to take extra time but it didn't really. I decided to make View E in size 12 in a strapless version to cut back on time too.

How long did it take to complete: I swear I finished this in little over an hour.

Overall Review: This pattern was nice. No problems at all. The sizing said the finished bust would be 32 which I didn't notice until I was almost finished with the dress hahaha..I thought it was going to be extra tight across my chest but it wasn't. It stayed in place when I was wearing it. I danced in the dress and don't remember having to pull it up at all.

KWIK SEW 3333

Fabric used: Black and pink knit-again, the picture doesn't really show the pink too well. Maybe I have a raggedy camera hahaha..I made the top from View A and the bottom from View B.

Complexity of pattern: This pattern was extra easy. Only 4 pieces. It called for clear elastic to be used in the waist area which I have never worked with before. It was easy to use but I don't understand why regular elastic couldn't be used.

How long did it take to complete: It took close to 2 hours for this one. It was late and I was moving kinda slow.

Overall Review: This pattern was ok BUT, the sizing was off IMO. I made a medium which was for bust size 37-38 1/2, waist size 27 1/2-29 and hip size 38 1/2 to 40First of all, it said use 1/4 seam allowances which was strange to me so I didn't do it. I used 5/8. I did follow the instructions about using 3/8 seam allowance to sew the bodice to the skirt because the elastic that is used for the waist is 3/8. Even with using 5/8 seam allowances, I had to take the dress in TWICE,it was too dang big. And really, I could of taken it in again but didn't feel like it. It still fits ok. I don't think I have sewn a Kwik Sew pattern before so maybe this is the norm for them. I just know to make a small next time and still might have to take it in hahaha.

I know I have been MIA..me and my honey had been making the most of our "kid-free" time we had for a couple of weeks. I did manage to sew up a few things though. The white, tan and green maxi I used Simplicity 3503 again but just made the top portion a tube top. I wore the yellow dress to my cousins wedding. My husband decided to buy a yellow shirt to match LOL. The black and white dress I wore when me and my daughter went to NYC. We took a pic with Morgan Freeman!!!!!!! J/K..that is his wax figure.

Fabric used: Yellow Jet Set

Complexity of pattern: I would say Intermediate...the way you do the ruffles is a bit tricky but I finally figured it out. Plus it was really late and my brain was shutting down hahaha

How long did it take to complete: Honestly I can't remember..my guess would be close to 5 hours.

Overall Review: The dress is really cute!! Perfect for a wedding or similar occasion. The pattern is decent. A little tricky in spots like I said but ok. I doubt I will sew this again.

Fabric used: Black and White printed cotton-I only used 2 different prints instead of 3 like the picture shows.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner...this was an easy pattern. Basically all halter patterns all the same with variations to the bodice and midriff parts.

How long did it take to complete: Around 2 1/2 hours

Overall Review: I like this pattern. The contrasting material is what makes this one stand out. I don't think I will be sewing this one again..at least not this summer. I am about done sewing maxi dresses for the season.

The Joann's closest to my house is closing. I really like this store and all the employees know me. I don't know if that is a bad or good thing hahaha...The closest one to me now will be the one in Greenbelt. The ones in Columbia and Annapolis are nice but I can really only make it to those locations on the weekend. Oh well, I guess I will get over it.I am going to stop in there this week probably for the last time. They make it such a secret when they think the actual last day will be. Some of the discounts weren't that great IMO especially if they need to get rid of everything. We shall see...

It's HAMMER time!! hahaha..one of my girlfriends HATES the new fad of the infamous Hammer pants that are back in style. I told her I was going to make some just to get on her nerves. I self drafted a plain tube top with two rows of elastic to wear with them.

Fabric used: Teal Rayon Challis...the fabric was easy to work with but I don't like how it gets really wrinkled fairly quick. I ironed the pants several times and even put some starch on them to try and combat the wrinkles but it just must be the fabric.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner to Intermediate..I had no issues with this pattern. Very easy construction. I like the back zipper. There are pleats in the front and the back.

How long did it take to complete: 3 1/2 hours including top.

Overall Review: I like this pattern! I think they look really good on me hahaha..they weren't as "hammerish" as some of the ones I have seen in magazines and on the Internet. I wore them to have lunch with a few friends and I received several compliments. I may make these again in the long version if I can find some fabric that drapes the same way but doesn't get so wrinkled.

McCall 5893/Simplicity 3503

Maxidresses are my thing now a days. They are so comfortable and you can pretty much let it all hang out underneath them hahaha. These are the latest ones I finished up. I plan on sewing up at least 3 more over the next couple weeks with a few other patterns I have.

Fabric used: Green knit..it has a textured crinkly look to it. It looks better on the dress form than it does on me hahaha. The fabric is neat the way the texture looks. I wore it to work with a jacket.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner..it can't get any easier than this. The pattern has 3or 4 pieces depending on which view you choose.

How long did it take to complete: 1 1/2 hours..maybe a little less

Overall Review: This is one of the easiest patterns I have ever sewn. I probably will make this again. It is something quick and easy to throw on for work or just being out and about.

SIMPLICITY 3503

I used this pattern a few times last year for some maxi dresses so I was familiar with it. I altered the pattern to get the multi colored look this time.

Fabric used: Several knits in different colors. I don't know how I feel about it now. Maybe I should have only used 3 or 4 colors. It looks a tad busy hahaha..I have been having all of them in my stash since last summer so I needed to figure out something to do with them. I believe I got all of them at Walmart for 1.00 a yard.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner to Intermediate. I made the view with the halter but I cut the bottom part of the dress with all the different knit colors.

How long did it take to complete: It took about 7 hours or so. I had to gather each color for a proper fit when I was sewing them together. If I had of sewn it with just one fabric, it probably would of been around 3 hours or less.

Overall Review: I like the look of the this pattern with just one fabric and the multi colored way I did it. You are supposed to use tricot for lining the bodice but that is hard to find around here so I used the same fabric I used for the bodice to line it. I think I am going to sew the view showed with the tannish looking color fabric.

I was doing a little window shopping a few days ago and saw this ruffly blouse at The Gap. It immediately made me think of this pattern I have had for awhile so I decided to sew it up this weekend. My sweetie and I were going on a date on Saturday to take an Argentine Tango lesson (LOL) and I thought the blouse would be pretty. I have attached some tango pics as well for your enjoyment hahaha!!

Fabric used: I am unsure. It may be some type of Crepe. Maybe Gauze. I have had it for 2 years in my stash. It wasn't the easiest to sew with that is for sure. At first I was going to use this silky Japanese print but for whatever reason I can't bring myself to use it for anything. It is so pretty!! haha

Complexity of pattern: Beginner to Intermediate. I did do some changes to the ruffles. Instead of hemming the ruffles, I did a small overcast on them. Very similar to how the one from The Gap is made. Trying to hem this fabric was basically a nightmare. It worked out well and saved me alot of time.

How long did it take to complete: 4 1/2 hours

Overall Review: I really really like this pattern. I definitely plan on sewing this pattern again. I have several fabric pieces I could use for this. I think I could wear this blouse to work with a jacket over it.

Butterick 5088 and 5330

I have had this jacket 95% completed for over a month. I just needed to do the buttonholes and sew on the buttons. I love big buttons on certain pieces and I was a bit discouraged because both of my sewing machines only do buttonholes that are a maximum in size of 1 1/4. I am just realizing this after using one machine for 2 years and the other one for 6 months and I had no clue as to how I was going to make the buttonholes. The buttons I used were 1 3/8 and the pattern called for 1 1/4. Someone suggested a satin stitch which sounded more complicated than I cared to try. I decided that I would just make 2 zig zags and a bar tack at each end and my usual stabilizer on the front and back. They actually turned out well. Pay no mind to my weird facial expressions hahaha.

Fabric used: I made view A with Zebra stripped linen with just a plain white cotton lining. At first I was going to use a yellow lining but the zebra fabric is really thin and the yellow would have been seen.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner to Intermediate. It wasn't hard at all. I had no major issues.

How long did it take to complete: 8 hours(maybe 9 or 10) I can't really remember.

Overall Review: The jacket looks great. The sleeves are what I like most about this pattern. I think the buttons that I chose compliment the fabric well. I ordered them off of ebay and they came in a bag of 20 so you may see them on another piece that I make hahaha. I have this kelly green material that would look fab made from this pattern. Decisions Decisions.

Butterick 5330

I had the pleasure of finally meeting my beautiful sister-in-law Curetta and her daughter Jasmine as well as some other family this weekend when we went down to Georgia for Jasmine's graduation. I knew the graduation was going to be held outdoors so I made something nice and cool to wear.

Fabric used: Broadcloth in white, yellow and orange. I made view C but I shortened the main part of the skirt and added an extra ruffle.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner. As easy as it gets probably even with the changes I made.

How long did it take to complete: almost 2 hours but I think I could of completed it quicker.

Overall Review: If you love long skirts and want to whip up something quick, this is the pattern for you. It wound up being a tad shorter than it was suppose to be due to the changes I made and my bum measurements hahaha. I am liking the multi colored skirts and maxi dresses so I am going to make this again maybe with 3 ruffles this time with different colors. I am planning on making a multi colored maxi dress within the next couple weeks as well.

I know I have been MIA for a minute. I have been dealing with life stuff that has kept me away from blogging and sewing. I had a death in the family and was out of town for a week and just plain ol busy in general. I have a few updates to share though.

I met the ladies for tea this weekend at the Mandarin Oriental so I decided to sew me up something to for the occasion.

Fabric used: Brown and pink polka dot cotton.

Complexity of pattern: I used one of my vintage patterns. It was really easy. I think a beginner could handle it with no problem. I did have to do some research on what a placket zipper was. This is a term used on vintage patterns frequently. Basically a lapped zipper is all it is.

How long did it take to complete: 6 hours

Overall Review: I absolutely love how the dress turned out. The pattern was a size 18-36 chest, 30 waist and 39 hips. I could of made it a bit smaller in the waist and hips but it fit good. The darts and pleats in the front really make the dress look nice. It called for shoulder pads but I omitted those. I did the belt a little different as well. I think this dress would be really cute in some gingham fabric so I will put that on my list as tentative.

I was fortunate enough to meet one of my top sewing idols this weekend...MIMI GOODWIN!!! She is in DC visiting for the holiday weekend and we met up at G street fabrics in Falls Church. She is just how I expected her to be. Down to earth, friendly and just mad cool. Not to mention she is such a cutie. Jacqui and Nettie came out as well and it was great meeting them. I have good news and bad news. The good news is I finished my coat for the vintage pattern contest. The bad news is, I posted my review on the sewing forum ONE minute past midnight so my entry isn't valid. This is the dreaded pm I received from the lady on the contest committee:

Hi queensh,

I'm so sorry that I have disappointing news to tell you. I checked with the Contest Committe, and I'm afraid your review was posted too late to be entered into the Vintage contest. They're extremely strict about the midnight deadline. And even though your review was posted just one minute after midnight, unfortunately it will not be included.

I'm so sorry there was confusion about the deadline. This is understandable, though I did indicate several times that the contest would end at midnight of last night.

Once again, I want to let you know how badly I feel. Your white cotton coat is so chic and elegant, I'm sure it would have been a very popular choice.

THAT BITES!!!! hahaha...oh well, teaches my late-doing-stuff tail a lesson I guess.

Here is my review:

Fabric used: Cotton Blend with a subtle flower pattern.

Complexity of pattern: The pattern was a little challenging constructing the collar but I figured it out. I improvised on some of the directions a bit doing the interfacing and facings. The pattern must have come out before fusible interfacing was available because the directions said to sew the facing and the interfacing on to the front of the coat separately. I could not find 2 1/2 inch belting or belt buckle so I had to get creative and I purchased some fake leather belting that was folded on each side and when opened all the way up, it was 3 inches and the silver buckle I found was 3 inches so it worked out great. I also used 3/8 seams to give a little more room because the pattern is a 12. Size 34 bust, 25.5 waist and 36 inch hip. I also did my first Hong Kong finish on the seams. It turned out well I think. I didn't really do a "cuff" for the French cuffs. I like them better the way I have them but I am considering adding the extra button holes to do the cuffs.

How long did it take to complete: 12 hours

Overall Review: I love the look of the coat. Very classy. I doubt if I will sew this one again. This is a type piece that needs to be the one and only.

Ugh!! I know I haven't done an update this week but I have been diligently working on getting a project done for this sewing contest I entered. As usual, I sat on my duff and waited til the last minute to start the darn thing and it is due tomorrow so I will be slaving tonight and most of tomorrow night to get it done on time. The contest is the Vintage Pattern contest on PatternReview.com. Here is the pattern that I am making. It hasn't been the easiest but I haven't had any major issues and I am so thankful for this (keeping fingers cross). Here is a peek at the pattern I am working on. I will post the complete review when I am done.

Vintage Vogue 8440

I finished my first vintage pattern. It is a halter top that looks as if it is from the 70's or 80's.

Fabric used: Brocade...Brown with Ocean or Spa Blue flower print. I made the view on the far right with the white collar. I added the belt to mine although it wasn't as long as it should of been due to lack of material. This blouse only needed a yard of fabric. Maybe 1 and 1/4. I have been having this fabric for over a year in my stash.

Complexity of pattern: The pattern wasn't difficult at all. I improvised on a few of the directions for simplicity reasons. Their directions for putting in the centered zipper were strange to me so I did it the way I normally would.

How long did it take to complete: 3.5 hours.

Overall Review: I really like this pattern. I think I may make the view shown in white with like the turtle neck top later this summer. The only thing that kinda sucked is the size. Vintage patterns only come in one size per envelope. Current patterns provide 3 or 4 sizes per envelope. This pattern is a size 12 with the measurements 34 bust with a 25 1/2 inch waist line. My bust is 36 and my waist is 27so is was a bit snug...hahaha..my husband was scared he was going to break the zipper zipping me up. I was concerned about what would happened when I sat down but I had no problems. We went to dinner and and it didn't bother me at all. Actually it seemed to loosen up some through out the night. The next one I make will probably be a knit material that has some stretch to it or maybe I will feel like altering the pattern to make it bigger.

First thing first, HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!! I had a good day and I hope everyone had a beautiful day with your loved ones.

I have been working on these 2 patterns it seems like FOREVER!! I could of been done a few days ago but I had other things to tend to this week. I actually finished the vest almost 2 weeks ago but did not complete the pants until today.

Fabric used:Poly/Rayon..black, green and white plaid which I don't know why I like to torture myself sewing plaid cause matching the lines up can be time consuming and start to be a pain after awhile but I think I did pretty good.

Complexity of pattern: Both patterns were pretty easy so I would say Beginner-Beginner Advanced could sew these without any problems. For the pants, I made the view that is shown in the maroon/burgundy looking color and the vest was the view with the brown looking color with the ribbon tied around the waist. I didn't do the ribbon part of it.

How long did it take to complete: The pants took about 3 hours and the vest probably about 10 hours!!(WAAAAAYYYY TOOOOOO LOONNNNGGGGG) LOL!

Overall Review: I like the pants pattern the best of course because it is super easy and they fit great. They have a back centered zipper and darts in the front and back. Now, the vest...it took entirely too long. And having to try and match the plaid lines didn't help. I made the halter view of this pattern a few months ago and it took forever as well so I should of known. The vest fits ok. I made a 12 but a 14 would have been better. I had to place the buttons closer together the make it fit properly. I am not sure when I will actually wear the outfit but it is for work so it could be soon. I think I will wear it with a white tuxedo blouse. I will update the post with a picture of me wearing it at that time. I will probably make the pants again but the vest pattern will be packed away to the archives unless I absolutely have to have a vest for something but I have a couple of other untouched vest patterns that might be more tolerable.

Well I am slowly pulling out of my sewing slump. My daughter's birthday party was Saturday and I decided to whip up something quick and casual for us to play laser tag in. At first her party theme was Littlest Pet Shop so I started making her a cute little vest with some Littlest Pet Shop fabric and then on Friday, I was informed the new theme was Hannah Montana. It was late and I really didn't feel like going through the motions of cutting and sewing another vest all in less than 24 hours so I decided to do something quick and easy and made her a little purse with some Hannah Montana fabric to match the shirt she was wearing. I was feeling kind of springy so I made myself a pink top.

I have a few things in the works to complete by the end of the week. I finally finished a vest I was working on and I am making matching slacks for it. Hopefully I can have them done in the next couple of days and post reviews. Also I am starting to work on one of my vintage patterns. I read through the directions and it doesn't appear that it is going to be difficult but you never know. Here is the review for my pink top:

How long did it take to complete: 3 hours

Overall Review: This pattern was easy. The hood part of it was interesting. You have to make sure your seams are neat and even because they show when the hood part is hanging down which is the only way I wore it. I didn't put the elastic in the bottom hem like the direction stated and I made the sleeves a little longer. I can see myself sewing this pattern again. More than likely it will be the sleeveless version without the hood. These style tops go really well with leggings so this can be a real casual outfit for the summer.

I used a New Look pattern for my daughter's purse and I think it took me about 45 minutes to complete. The pattern was geared toward a teenage girl and the purse was bigger so I took a couple of inches off of it to suit her better.

My motivation to sew is in the toilet right now. As soon as I get home from work, all I feel like doing after I get dinner and stuff squared away is sitting my fanny on that couch and watching tv. I have a few things in the works that I need to get done by this weekend but sometimes I feel like I am just spinning my wheels. I need to set goals and stick to them no matter what! I am thinking 2 completed garments a week minimum. That would take some SERIOUS dedication on my part. There just aren't enough hours in the day. Sometimes I bring things to work and sew them! hahahaha...I keep a little sewing machine in my office and the times when I know I will be the only one there, I will bring parts of something I am working on to try and get ahead of the game. Gotta get it in when I can!!

These are the latest additions to my vintage pattern collection. I am thinking about entering the Vintage Pattern Contest for the month of April on the sewing forum. I have 3 or 4 patterns in mind for it. This will be my first contest and I know the competition is going to be tough. Sometimes I feel like I should have been born in different era. I love the feminine and classy look of vintage clothing and 95% of the time I listen to music that is from the 1980's or earlier LOL!

Overall Review: This pattern was much easier than I thought it would be. It had alot of pieces but they weren't difficult to work with. The style of the dress is really cute. I probably will make one of the short sleeve versions in the summer.

Spring/Summer Stash

This weather is going to drive me nuts. It was almost 80 degrees here this weekend and the temps are going back down. I AM READY TO START SEWING MY SPRING/SUMMER WARDROBE!! I have officially packed away all the winter fabric and it's headed to the garage and will be replaced with my spring/summer tubs of fabric. I thought posting some of my spring/summer stash and what I THINK I might sew with them would put me in a better mood.

These are going to be dresses. I have a few patterns in mind.

These are all going to be jackets. I have several patterns in mind for all of these. Just need to make some final decisions about them. The purple one is a little deeper in color than the picture shows and the white one has flowers stitched into the fabric. You may can see them if you click on the picture to enlarge the photo.

This is a mystery fabric. At first I was thinking jacket but my husband said it would be a cute skirt. It is like a pale yellow with polka dots. After realizing how many jackets I plan on making, I might listen to my better half on this one :-)

Vintage Patterns

I am having a love affair with vintage patterns. (Don't tell my husband LOL) Pretty much all the ones I have were purchased off of Ebay. I usually pay no more than 3.00 dollars for them but some of the real old classic ones aren't cheap. I have seen one as high as 60.00 dollars. This is one of Butterick's new patterns for Spring that I sewed up for something quick and easy to do. I made View A in medium.

Overall Review: I really like this pattern. It was super easy which is always a good thing. I like the way it has a gathered look. I plan on making the long maxi dress version a few times for the summer.

I made View B in size 12 which is in grey on the pattern envelope.

Fabric used: Target poplin. It is maybe a step down in thickness from denim. It was fairly easy to work with.

Complexity of pattern: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

How long did it take to complete: 14 hours

Overall Review: I like this pattern. I had to redo the first sleeve I sewed on because I put it on backwards so paying attention to the correct direction certain pieces need to be sewn on for this pattern is important. When I wore it, I left the 1st button undone and opened up the collar a little. I kinda wish I made a 14 in this because it is really form fitting but the 12 is ok. I might sew this pattern again in a thinner material and a more spring like color but I have a few other jacket patterns I need to sew up first.

This is a design that I plan to put on most of my clothes to give it somewhat of a personal touch. It is a Queen's crown. I embroidered it on the lower right side of the jacket.

Happy Belated Valentine's Day

I hope everyone had a good weekend and Valentine's Day. Mine was good. Just a quiet evening at home. I did get away for a few hours to attend this sewing meeting sponsored by the DC Threads. I was invited to it by a lady from a sewing forum that I frequent. It was a good crowd. As you see from the picture they have several sewing machines and ladies were giving instructional time as well as helping people sew quick and easy projects. They meet once a month on the second Saturday. I plan on going back.

I managed to whip up something red to wear on Valentine's Day. Nothing too fancy.

That is me in the corner with the black coat on. The lady standing is giving information about how to read patterns, etc. I did learn a thing or two.

It fits perfectly on my homemade dress form LOL! I don't have the belt as tight as I did when I wore it.

I made View A

Fabric used: It was was some type of satin/brocade but rather thin. I added extra interfacing to the belt piece to give it more firmness.

Complexity of pattern: Beginner-I think a beginner could sew this without too many problems. The belt might be tricky but just read the directions a few times and you should get it.

How long did it take to complete: About 3 hours

Overall Review: This pattern was nice. It was really easy and I love the look of it. I may sew this again down the road with a really pretty brocade.

Embroidering Frenzy!

I have figured out how to use the embroidery component for my machine and I have all these ideas swimming in my mind about all the stuff I want to embroider! LOL. It is the coolest thing ever. My regular sewing was put on the back burner this past week so I could learn my new machine and I haven't even scratched the surface. I need to get back on track because there are some things I need to complete over the next week or so. My first embroidery project was something for my daughter for Valentine's Day. She loves Hello Kitty although I suspect she might be growing out of it but oh well, she will be ok. I found a Hello Kitty embroidery pattern that I downloaded to my machine and I stitched it on a some towels with her name. I think she will like them.

New Edition To My Sewing Family!!

My new sewing machine arrived the other day. It is a Brother HE-240 Sewing and Embroidery Combo. Initially I thought it was model SE-350 but they are almost identical except the front panel is different. I am loving it already and I haven't really even scratched the surface with all it does. So now I have 3 sewing machines and a serger. I am so fascinated with how the new machine just sews on its own with a touch of a button. My machine isn't even really one of the most expensive ones out there. I can only imagine what the more expensive machines are capable of doing.

All the feet that came with the accessory kit. I am going to have fun figuring out how to use all of them.

I played around with the machine for a while to test the embroidering feature.
It has 70 built in patterns and has USB port to download other patterns from the internet. The buttonholes are excellent. I wasn't totally satisfied with the buttonholes on my other machine.

Completed Duck Tape Dress Form

I finished the dress form and it turned out pretty good. It has the exact same measurements as I do. At least for now. I am still on a quest to lose a few more pounds. I still have to think of a name for her. Shout out to my DH for always being so helpful.

I stewed and stewed over purchasing a dress form. Anybody that knows me can testify that I can be really cheap hahaha. I will search high and low to find the less expensive route to go. I looked at a few dress forms but could not bring myself to pay between $125 and $200 for one. I even told my husband to buy me one for my birthday but I changed my mind. I ran across some videos of people making their own dress forms with duck tape and it sounded like something right up my alley. Here are my supplies:

Go Steelers!!

My family has a friendly rivalry going with the Superbowl. The fellas want the Cardinals to win and the ladies are going for the Steelers. I decided to rub it in their face a little and whip up me and my step daughter some Steeler gear to wear while we watch the game. I only used a yard and a half of fabric and it took about an hour and half for all 3 pieces. Nothing fancy just a little something to represent. They better win now!!

Houndstooth Jacket

Here is the jacket from McCall 5717. It turned out good. My review is below:

Fabric used: Some type of polyester blend

Lining used: Red Zeus

Complexity of pattern: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate

How long did it take to complete: 20 hours

Overall review: This pattern was ok. It took way too long to complete. It had alot of pattern pieces. I had some issues with the ruffle and trying to get it to fit properly on the lower half of the jacket. The only change I did was use 1 1/2 inch buttons instead of 1 3/8 like the pattern called for because I couldn't find any covered button kits in that size. I don't think I will sew this pattern again.

First project of 2009

This is kinda the first thing I am working on for 2009. I say kinda because technically, the first thing was an evening gown for an inauguration gala that my husband and I were going to attend but we ended up not going because we were given inauguration tickets at the last minute and by the time we got home from all those activities, we were so exhausted that we didn't make it to the gala. So the gown will just collect dust in my closet.

I made a houndstooth jacket I have been wanting to sew for a couple of months. I finished it tonight after being mostly frustrated the whole time I worked on it. It took way too long to complete due to various reasons. The pattern and material are pictured below.

I made View A but I added the ruffle at the bottom like on Views B and C. The fabric is really a mystery to me..hahaha..it is a weird polyester blend. It wasn't the easiest to sew with but it turned out well. It is one of my G street clearance table finds. I will post my full review and the finished piece later.

Well I just had a birthday. I won't bother mentioning my age because everyone already knows I am 25. Soooo, I have finally decided to get with the program and join modern civilization in 2009 and start my own blog. This blog will be dedicated strictly to one of the things I love best, sewing. I can't say that I won't share a few personal things on here but I don't anticipate there being many. Some of things I hope to share are pieces that I have sewn and things that I plan on working on in the future. I also plan on finding interesting tips and tricks that I feel that will be helpful to me and my fellow sewers. Now I am going to keep it real, I really can't see updating on a daily basis but I am going to try really hard to be consistent with at least 3 times a week. I hope everyone enjoys coming here and seeing the things I consider my "jewels" hence the name of my blog.
